Most visitors never get past the beach and the boulevard, which is fine for a weekend but leaves out two of the more interesting things on this coast. One is a real film studio, the other is a canyon strung with ziplines, and both are close enough to fit into a single afternoon.
Built in the 1990s to film Titanic, the studio has one of the largest water tanks in the world and has since hosted other major productions. Tours run on a set schedule and take you through soundstages and the tank itself when it is not in active use.
An adventure park set in a canyon a short drive inland, with ziplines, suspension bridges and rappelling lines strung between platforms. Most courses run two to three hours and suit a range of ages and nerve levels.
Studio tours and the adventure park sit on opposite sides of Rosarito, roughly 15 to 20 minutes apart, so a full day covers both with time left for lunch on the boulevard in between.
Both attractions are day activities — nobody sleeps at a film studio. Downtown Rosarito is the natural base, close to both and back on the sand by evening.

Getting here
Cross at San Ysidro or Otay, take the Tijuana–Ensenada scenic road and exit at Rosarito Centro: about 40 minutes from San Diego. Coming from Ensenada it is 50 minutes on the same road. There is private parking in the building, so you never have to move the car all weekend.
